Bayyina Gets Dismissed From Class Jan 30, 2007
by Zuhair Fancy

When these teams met up during the regular season it was Fatiha escaping with a 45-43 win. Bayyina big man Colin Garraway dominated with 35 points but the rest of his team only combined for 8 points. Fatiha was missing some of their key players so it would be interesting to see how this playoff game turned out.

Fatiha came out strong to start as they pushed the ball up court and scored easy baskets in transition. Bayyina was unable to rotate defensively and allowed Vikram Singh to seemingly score at will. Teepu Khawja also showed an early hot hand as he drained a pair of three pointers to help Fatiha build an early 18-3 lead. Bayyina finally seemed to wake up and Garraway and Rahyl Hassan scored some points down low to help close the gap.

When the first half ended it was Fatiha leading 33-19. Singh finished with 13 points to lead Fatiha while Garraway led Bayyina with 10 points.

The second half saw Bayyina continue to battle to try and stay in the game and managed to get back within 8 points but Khawja took matters into his own hands as he drove the lane hard and drew contact for the foul while hitting his lay-up. After he hit his free throw to complete the three point play, Bayyina seemed to have had the air taken out of them and Fatiha coasted the rest of the way.

Garraway led all players with 21 points but was held to 6 rebounds. Fatiha got a balanced effort with Singh finished with 15 points while Khawja pitched in with 14 points.

Fatiha will now move on to face Ikhlas in the second round. When these teams met in the regular season it was Fatiha that walked away with the win by a 58-51 margin. Fatiha will need its bench to step up as reports indicate that Mohammed Dirie will remain unavailable due to a lower body injury, his 12.3 points and 10.5 rebound per game average will be missed.
